In 1935, António Egas Moniz performed the lobotomy for the first time to treat severe mental disorders. The procedure irreversibly severed connections in the brain and was intended to have a calming effect. He thus founded psychosurgery. Despite later criticism of severe side effects – such as the loss of emotional sensations – the method was widely used and Moniz was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1949. Lobotomies were performed thousands of times, particularly in the USA, partly to correct behavior. With the development of modern psychotropic drugs, however, it became less important and is now considered a controversial chapter in the history of medicine.
