Hải Thượng Lãn Ông (1724–1791), whose real name was Lê Hữu Trác, was a prominent physician and founder of traditional Vietnamese medicine. Born into a scholarly family, he initially pursued a military career but turned to medicine after suffering a severe illness. Under the guidance of Trần Độc, he acquired extensive knowledge and integrated Chinese healing practices with Vietnamese traditions. His major work, Y tôn tâm lĩnh (28 volumes), is considered a milestone in Vietnamese medicine. In 1782, he was summoned to the royal court to treat Crown Prince Trịnh Cán but soon withdrew. He passed away in 1791, and his legacy continues to shape Vietnamese medicine today.
