Frantz Fanon (1925–1961) was a French psychiatrist, writer, and one of the most influential thinkers of decolonization. Raised in Martinique, he fought for France during World War II, studied in Lyon, and later headed the psychiatric clinic in Blida, Algeria. In 1956, he joined the FLN; his medical practice and involvement in the anti-colonial struggle deeply shaped his thought. In Black Skin, White Masks (1952), he analyzed racism and alienation; in The Wretched of the Earth (1961), he examined the violence of colonial rule and the liberation of the oppressed. Fanon died of leukemia in 1961—his work continues to influence postcolonial studies and critical theory to this day.
