Karl Landsteiner (1868–1943) was an Austrian physician and immunologist who discovered blood groups A, B and 0 around 1900; AB was added shortly afterwards. This explained for the first time why blood transfusions failed, and people with blood group 0 have been considered ‘universal donors’ ever since. Landsteiner received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1930 for this groundbreaking achievement. He also conducted research on polio, syphilis and typhoid fever and recognised the importance of the Rhesus factor. The stamp design picks up on this discovery and shows in a graphic against a background of red blood cells which blood groups are compatible with each other – an impressive reminder that blood donations are still irreplaceable today.

An architectural gem is the Upper Nikolayevsky Mineral Baths building, erected at the end of the 19th century in honour of Tsar Nicholas II. With its impressive floor plan, marble vases and elegant courtyards, it embodies the heyday of spa culture. Originally built for sulphur and mud baths, it is still used today for therapeutic treatments with the famous Essentuki mineral waters. In 2023, the building celebrated its 125th anniversary.
