Luis Simarro Lacabra (Rome, 1851-Madrid, 1921) was a Spanish alienist, neurologist, histologist and psychologist. He studied medicine at the University of Valencia in 1868. However, he had to move to Madrid after being expelled from medical school in Valencia because of his closeness to Darwinism.  He received his doctorate there in 1875, specialising in neuropsychiatry. He worked in Madrid in various posts but had to resign his directorship of the Santa Isabel de Leganés asylum because of disagreements with the ecclesiastical authorities. In 1880 he emigrated to Paris and later returned to Madrid, where he set up a private laboratory. In this laboratory, Simarro Santiago Ramón y Cajal taught the method of Camillo Golgi. In 1902 he became a professor of experimental psychology at the Central University of Madrid, the first chair of scientific psychology in Spain. He died in Madrid at the age of 70.
