Franco Basaglia (1924-1980) completed his medical studies at the University of Padua in 1949 and taught psychiatry there. In 1961, he took over the management of the psychiatric hospital in Gorizia and was shocked by the inhumane conditions. He campaigned for the closure of the institutions and introduced reforms such as the therapeutic community, but these were not enough. In 1968, Basaglia moved to Colorno, while his colleagues continued to work in Gorizia and Reggio Emilia. From 1972, he worked in Trieste, where he realized that only the dissolution of the institutions would enable efficient treatment. Thanks to his successes and political support, the Italian parliament passed Law 180 in 1978, which provided for the abolition of psychiatric institutions.
