Nikolai Burdenko (1876–1946) was a Russian-Soviet surgeon and the founder of neurosurgery in Russia. As Chief Surgeon of the Red Army, he organized military medicine and developed new methods of field surgery. He made important contributions to the treatment of brain injuries and the use of modern therapies in wartime.

His role at the end of the Second World War is viewed critically: he led the Katyn investigation into the murder of about 22,000 Polish officers in the spring of 1940 and endorsed the false Soviet narrative that blamed Germany; this was only officially revised in 1990.
