Matilde Petra Montoya Lafragua (1857–1938) was the first officially licensed female physician in Mexico. Despite significant social and institutional resistance, she studied medicine and received her authorization in 1887 following the personal intervention of President Porfirio Díaz. She specialized in gynecology and obstetrics and was particularly committed to improving medical care for women. Montoya is regarded as a pioneer of women’s education in Mexico’s healthcare system. Her life exemplifies the struggle of women for equality in science and medicine.
