Constantin I. Parhon became Professor of Neurology in 1913 and headed the mental hospital in Iași, which he expanded to include endocrinology. From 1934, he taught endocrinology in Bucharest. After the abdication of Michael I, Parhon became head of state of Romania in 1947. He resigned in 1952 to devote himself to scientific studies.

Milan Jovanović-Batut (* October 10, 1847; † September 11, 1940) studied medicine in Vienna and treated his tuberculosis in Opatija. From 1880, he was a doctor in Sombor and editor of the journal Zdravlje. From 1882 to 1885 he studied hygiene and bacteriology in Germany and France. In 1887 he became professor of hygiene at the Belgrade High School and from 1892 its rector. Under his influence, one of the first ministries of public health in Europe was established in 1918. In 1919, he was the first dean of the newly founded Faculty of Medicine. He retired in 1924.

Coralie Cahen (1832-1899) founded the “Maison Israélite de Refuge pour l’Enfance” in 1866 and helped to set up an ambulance service and run a hospital during the Franco-Prussian War. She later became an advocate for French prisoners of war.

Marie-Léonie Génin (1859-1947) devoted herself to the training of nurses from 1870. In 1899, she ran the first nursing school in the 14th arrondissement of Paris and later founded the Peupliers hospital school, which she redesigned for wounded soldiers during the First World War.

Marcelle Barry (1896-1989) was one of the first Red Cross first aid nurse pilots in 1935. She led the return transport of wounded soldiers in 1940, organized aid for displaced persons in the Middle East in 1948 and developed the association’s rescue service until 1971.
