Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a genetic skin disease. Affected children are called butterfly children because their skin is as vulnerable as the wings of a butterfly. The cause is a congenital mutation in certain genes whose gene products (proteins) are responsible for the mechanical connection between the different skin layers. Due to their malfunction, blisters and sores can ever develop (on and throughout the body). The treatment includes regular (several times a day) wound care. Gene therapy, which has already shown success in individual cases, is the only hope for these young patients.
