Konik is considered one of the three founding fathers of the Republic of Estonia, who proclaimed the independent Republic of Estonia on February 24, 1918. Konik retired from active politics in the early 1920s. From September 1920 to 1931 Konstantin Konik was professor of surgery, dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tartu, and head of the university’s Nervous and Children’s Hospital. On March 8, 1920, he delivered the first Estonian-language auditorium lecture at the university.
