Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852-1934), who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1906 and is depicted on the central stamp of this block, laid the foundation for modern neuroscience. His groundbreaking work included the detailed analysis of the structure of the nervous system and proof of the independence of the nerve cell, which serves as the basis for neuronal theory. In his guidelines for scientific research, he emphasized that the highest glory of a teacher is not to have pupils who follow him blindly, but to create wise men who surpass him in their achievements.

In 1902, he founded the Spanish neurohistological school known as the Cajal School or Madrid School, which enjoyed an excellent international reputation. This school produced outstanding neurohistologists, including Pedro Ramon y Cajal, Jorge Francisco Tello, Domingo Sanchez Sanchez, Nicolas Achucarro y Lund, Rafael Lorente de No, Pio del Rio-Hortega, Gonzalo Rodriguez Lafora and Fernando de Castro Rodriguez. All of these personalities are depicted on this block, which thus honors the entire neurohistological school of Madrid.
