Aimé (also Amado) Jacques Alexandre Bonpland was a French naturalist and physician (1773-1858). He is known for his collaboration with Alexander von Humboldt during a scientific expedition through Latin America between 1799 and 1804. Bonpland contributed significantly to the understanding of South American flora and fauna. Among other things, Bonpland collected over 60,000 plant specimens on this trip, of which around 3,500 species had not yet been described. Nevertheless, to this day, the public perception of the expedition still places him in the shadow of Alexander von Humboldt. After the expedition, he settled in South America, became a professor of natural history and practiced as a doctor in various countries, including Paraguay and Argentina. Bonpland died in poverty in north-eastern Argentina after various politically very unfortunate attempts to settle down.

The “Danilo I” hospital was built in 1873 by Prince Nikola Petrović Njegoš and bears the name of Nikola’s predecessor, Prince Danilo. He brought the first court physicians to Cetinje in 1858 and thus initiated the practice of scientific medicine in Cetinje and Montenegro.
