Title: Alfred Edgar Wallace
Lecturer: Clemens M. Brandstetter
Abstract: Around 160 years ago, in the spring of 1858, the British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace – far away in the Indo-Malay archipelago and independent of Charles Darwin – recognized the mechanism of evolution. With the principle of natural selection, he achieved the decisive breakthrough in the discovery of the theory of evolution. Wallace’s work was first presented and subsequently published in London on July 1, 1858 under highly remarkable circumstances, together with an excerpt of Charles Darwin’s previously unpublished ideas. This has come to be known as the “race for the theory of evolution” between Wallace and Darwin.
