Edward W. Ryan (December 14, 1883 – September 18, 1923) was an American Red Cross official and physician, who dedicated his life to combat thypus worldwide.

During the Mexican revolution he helped soldiers and civilians wounded in the war, but was imprisoned and sentenced to death. He was however released and went to Europe, specifically Belgrad from 1914-1916. There he successfully fought an outbreak of typhus. In 1916 he left Serbia after having been again sentenced to death. Again he was released. He then moved to France, Greece, Germany, Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania establishing Red Cross offices and again fighting typhus. In 1922 he returned to the US, before he settled out to his last travel – to the Iran, where he caught malaria and died of heart disease in 1923.
