On the stamp, next to the portrait of Florence Nightingale, you can see the so-called Florence Nightingale Rose Diagram. Few know that Florence Nightingale, in addition to being a pioneer of modern nursing, was a gifted statistician. The Rose Diagram, also known as the Coxcomb Diagram, is a special type of pie chart used to represent data in a radially symmetric format. It is particularly useful for visualizing changes over time or differences between different categories.

Florence Nightingale used the Rose Diagram to powerfully illustrate her findings that a large proportion of deaths in the Crimean War were not caused by war wounds, but by infections and poor sanitary conditions. Based on this data, it was ultimately possible to improve health care for the soldiers but also for the population.

Juileta Lanteri (born in Italy in 1873, her parents emigrated to Argentina in 1879) was the first woman to attend the Colegio Nacional in La Plata (Argentina), graduating in pharmacology in 1898. She then studied medicine at the Universidad Nacional de Buenos Aires. In 1906, Lanteri became the sixth woman to earn her medical degree in Argentina.

After graduating, Lanteri worked for ten years in the casualty and infirmary of a hospital. She specialized in the treatment of mental ailments and diseases of women and children. From 1907 to 1920, she traveled frequently to Europe to learn about standards in hospitals, asylums, and schools. In Argentina, Lanteri worked to implement health reforms to improve care for women, children, and unwed mothers.

However, she became known mainly for her work as a women’s rights activist. She was very active politically and died in a car accident in 1932, under as yet unexplained circumstances.
